Sunny
Revelations
Kristen from Seacrest Sourdough
Kristen is the founder and owner of Seacrest Sourdough, our favorite local micro-bakery on a mission to bring back real bread (organic, fermented, no additives). We met at the Pompano Beach Green Market where we both had booths. We were immediately drawn to each others products, she’s on the same mission for food that we’re on for skincare.
We’re grateful for her bread and for the following words which are her own:
No more poison
Since learning of the toxicity of mainstream sunscreens, I’ve totally switched to natural zinc and tallow sun balms for their dual functions as moisturizers and protectors.
I 🖤 Ancient Tallow
When Eruch and Ancient Tallow launched their sun balm it immediately became my go-to. I find that its rich texture creates a barrier that helps shield my skin from environmental stressors while keeping it hydrated.
That fateful day
But one sunny day at the beach with all the excitement of it being the first day of some small waves in Florida in a long time, I forgot to apply the sun balm. After a great day and a wholesome post-surf meal I checked my face. As anyone who’s been in the direct sun at the peak of the day for too long could guess, my face was dry and peeling was inevitable (or so I thought).
An ap-peel-ing story

The rescue attempt
Aware of tallow's deeply hydrating and nourishing properties I absolutely lathered on some Gentle Balm after a shower, right before bed.
I was thinking that as long as the skin cells are not completely dead and burnt, I have a chance to rehydrate them.
So I lathered up again morning, afternoon and evening of the next day.

The result
My skin stayed hydrated and calm. There was no tightness, no burning sensation, and, to my surprise, no peeling in the days that followed! Instead, my skin ended up with a radiant, even, glowy tan that looked healthy!
A new tool in my life
While a sun balm protection layer is an obviously important sun care tool, it wasn’t until I “survived the peel” that I learned the power of post-sun and pre-sun hydration. I love simplicity so the Gentle Balm is now my preferred product to lock-in moisture before sun exposure and restore moisture post-sun.

My sun care routine
Pre-sun: I apply some Gentle Balm first thing in the morning to lock-in moisture for the day.
Early uninhibited exposure: I want to get some sunlight in my eyes and on my skin without anything blocking it. So I won’t apply any sun balm for the first little bit of the day.
Prevent over-exposure: After surfing for a bit or just hanging out at the beach I’ll apply some Sun Balm. The timing depends on the part of the day and how strong the sun is that day.
Post-sun: I’ll shower to rinse off sand and sweat, and then generously apply the Gentle Balm. I’ll apply this nourishing balm every morning and evening as well as when needed (whenever my skin feels a little dry).
