What is bioavailability and why it matters
What bioavailability means for skincare
In skincare, bioavailability measures how well the compounds of an ingredient achieve their desired effect based on the chemistry between the ingredient and your skin.
Hydrating compounds that are allowed to be absorbed into the skin and are easily utilized by the skin cells are very bioavailable.
Hydrating compounds that aren’t easily absorbed and that require skin cells to process and convert the compound in order to utilize it are less bioavailable.
Natural vs synthetic
The bioavailability of the compound often comes down to how it was made.
Naturally occurring compounds such as vitamin K in tallow are surrounded by other naturally occurring compounds such as triglycerides and fatty acids that aid in absorption. Most importantly, the body recognizes all of these compounds together and allows them to do their thing.
Synthetic compounds are created in isolation in a lab. Without the correct pattern of partner compounds the body may not know what to do with the compound on its own, rendering it less effective.
Oil wars
Oils are commonly used as the beneficial compounds’ delivery method in skincare products. They act as carriers, ensuring that beneficial compounds pass through the skin’s outer layers and work effectively.
Mainstream mineral oils
Most skincare products use mineral oils. They are often presented as natural since they are derived from naturally occurring fossil fuels. But they are intensely processed and refined before going into the product. Your skin may not know what to do with this sterile, highly refined oil. The beneficial compounds may not be delivered effectively and it may result in clogged pores, irritation, and breakout.
Naturally occurring oils in tallow
100% grass-fed beef tallow is primarily composed of triglycerides, which include three key fatty acids: Oleic Acid, Stearic Acid, and Palmitic Acid. Oleic Acid in particular is scientifically proven to be one of the best natural penetration enhancers, helping other beneficial ingredients absorb deeper into the skin and improve their effectiveness.
Don’t miss out
Tallow’s fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, are essential for nourishing and repairing the skin. These vitamins are better absorbed with the help of the fatty acids, promoting a healthy, glowing complexion without clogging pores.
Compare that to isolated synthetic vitamins in highly refined oils that the body doesn’t know how to deal with. Your skin may have a temporary smooth finish due to the mineral oil barrier, but you’re missing out on all of the deep nourishment and long-term benefits of 100% grass-fed beef tallow skincare.
